More on what a SWMS is

What is a SWMS?

A safe work method statement (SWMS) is a document that lists high risk construction work, the hazards and risks involved, and how those risks will be controlled, checked and reviewed. If your business does high risk construction work, the law says a SWMS must be ready before the work starts. Your workers should help prepare it.

What counts as high risk construction work?

Under the model WHS laws there are 18 types of high risk construction work (Victoria lists 19). Examples: a fall of more than 2 metres, work near energised electrical services, trenches deeper than 1.5 metres, work that may disturb asbestos.

Does it matter which state I work in?

Yes. Every state and territory except Victoria uses a version of the model WHS laws. Victoria has its own OHS laws, which also require a SWMS for high risk construction work. Tell us where you work and we write to the laws that apply there.

Are these off-the-shelf templates?

No. Each one is written from what you tell us about your work, your tools and your team.

What do I get?

Editable Word and PDF files. Change them as your jobs change, or let Keep It Current do it for you from $39 a month.

Who is responsible for safety on my job?

You are. Go through the documents with your workers and adapt them to each site before you use them.

Tell us how you work. We'll write it up.
